Digital color technology has evolved, however, without an industry standard for digital color. This has made it difficult to maintain color fidelity throughout the workflow from device to device. The graphic arts industry has responded to digital color needs with the evolution of color management systems.

Color management is a systematic approach to performing color conversions from image creation or capture to final output. The International Color Consortium (ICC) was formed in 1993 to develop one communication framework for all color management systems and is currently developing a color standard for digital color. The goal of the ICC is to provide a way for color management to occur seamlessly across multiple computer applications and platforms.
